Contacted them on Thursday evening as we needed a lentil assessment Asap. They arrived on Saturday and by Sunday night the
report was in. It transpired that we would require a steel beam recommendation as the current lentil was inadequate and were severely pressed for time. They stayed up late on Monday night completing calculations and submitting in the early hours of Tuesday I must also point out that communicating through out the entire process was fantastic we were made aware of all the issues that are present and may arise in the future this enabling us to make an informed decision regards to best way forward.

Hiring a structural engineer

A structural engineer is responsible for assessing the structural integrity of a building, as well as the viability of any planned alterations or extensions. A structural engineer might work as part of a larger team, for instance they may be collaborating with architects as the design proposition is developed. A structural engineer ultimately acts as a consultant, advising based on their calculations of the structure versus the design ambition.

Plentific can help you along by generating a bespoke list of the best structural engineers in your local area with the specific skills to suit you, as well as providing quick access to customer reviews to help you compare your options. By hiring a 'verified' Pro you will also gain coverage for your project from the Plentific Guarantee.

What do you need to think about when finding a structural engineer?

As you are hiring the structural engineer to act as an expert advisor, you must make sure they are qualified professionals. First step when liaising with your local structural engineer, is to ask for paperwork that verifies their background.

The certification you want to be looking for is ISE - Institute of Structural Engineers. Engineers registered have had to undergo a rigorous entrance process, and are regularly inspected for as long as they are as members. ISE registered structural engineers are also expected to continue their professional development. Members of this institute are qualified professionals.

You should also ask for testimonials from previous customers, as you want to explore whether they have relevant experience. For example, have they worked with buildings similar to yours before? What experience do they have of working within a team like the one you may hire?

An experienced professional should be able to provide all of this information. If they cannot, or are hesitant to do so, it would be wise to continue your search.

Also think about whether you are going to hire your team from the same business. For example, will your architect and structural engineer be from the same company?

What does a structural engineer do?

Structural engineers design and maintain the bones of a building. Their focus is not necessarily the aesthetics, but instead they have to consider safety of both the inhabitants of the property and the public.

The scale of their work can extend from small terraced houses, to bridges and skyscrapers - as their advice is relevant to both homes and businesses. Their role is to make sure that the design is strong enough to withstand all reasonable strain and consequently a large part of their role is assessing risks and outcomes.

Working as a part of the design and construction team, a structural engineer’s role is to advise what is possible within the design vision - with the building’s capabilities and environment in mind.

How much does a structural engineer cost?

The cost of your structural engineer will directly relate to whether your structural engineer is a sole trader or part of a larger company whereby you would hire the designer and the structural engineer under the same roof. How their pricing structure works is to take a percentage of the overall project cost and this tends to range within 2-5%.

Use Plentific to compare prices for the best local locksmiths in your area. Plentific recommends that you speak to at least three local structural engineers to receive quotes in order to find the best professional for your home services.

I want to knock down a wall that separates a bedroom from the reception room in the first floor of
a Victorian terrace. The wall sounds hollow and is thin. The building is four stories of which I have the two upper floors (first and second). The roof is flat. The joists run perpendicular to the wall in question. Also I would like to alter another wall that separates the current kitchen from a small toilet. Again it sounds hollow an is thin. Please see attached plans: "IMG_5269" is the current layout and "New layout" is the intended work. The free holder is asking for a structural engineer report before he consents to any work.

making an opening of 2.2m wide to the back wall of the house into my extension, where an existing patio
door will be removed. The house is an end of terrace with loft, this opening is on the ground floor. A calculation is required to check the size of the steel beam, that ends to be installed.

Hi, I work for the educational examination board 'Pearson Edexcel'. We are a privately owned examination board in the UK
that issue numerous qualifications to students including BTEC, HNC etc. I have been asked to have these two structural analysis and design assignments professionally completed so we can cross check them with submissions from the different colleges. Present your calculation in the standard design office format.

Garden drops down in height by 2m around ~4m back from house, patio shows signs of subsidence & current structural
wall pushing out. Would like calculations & designs for replacing or reinforcing wall with gabions or alternatives? Would want it to support a rear extension at a later date.
